CONGRATULATIONS WINNERS!
On behalf of the jurors and IRREVERSIBLE magazine, I would like to thank you for taking the time to apply to out Call For Artists competition of 2013. We appreciate the thought and initiative shown with your submission. The jury reviewed all submissions very carefully. There were large amounts of quality of works with only a limited number of applications that could be selected. The presentation of each entry was extremely important, the quality of the work and the information provided to the application. The technical merits were based on theme, composition, and perspective.
There is no doubt an artist grows by leaps and bounds when he or she puts artwork in the public eye for feedback, and that is what this art competitions is all about. History, patronage, commissions, and incredible opportunities have all been prizes afforded to winners of major art competitions. IRREVERSIBLE’s major goal is to further the reach and spectrum of opportunities available for an artist of any experience and medium.
I seek to outline a criteria as they form my current judging mindset. Keep in mind that these criteria are not immutable nor stagnant. My views change as the result of my ongoing viewing and study of new art and historical artifacts, readings of contemporary critical writing on art, and personal growth through creative production as an artist. I am sure that my ideas about critically evaluating artwork will continue to change in an ongoing process of growth and development.

Marcus Jansen

Marcus Jansen is a former soldier who transformed his life from being at War to a leading contemporary painter that became known for his gritty urban landscape paintings since the 1990′s. His most recent project “The Art Album”, a Russell Simmons supported book release by “Art on Dekz” in New York City shows Jansen’s work on the book cover with some of the worlds most recognized contemporary artists inside including, Shepard Fairey, Takashi Murakami, Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter and Chuck Close. Jansen’s Dallas + Marfa representatives Galleri Ubane will be showing Jansen’s new works on paper during Art Bas elMiami Beach at Art Miami CONTEXT and his first solo show in Milan opens at his Gallery representatives Bianca Maria Rizzi & Matthias Ritter on November 28. 2013.
Discovered by former Museum director Jerome A. Donson, (Director of the American Vanguard Exhibitions Europe 1961), in charge of traveling exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, (MOMA), New York, Jansen is an Internationally known painter and seen by many as a pioneer of expressive urban socio-political painting or as Donson puts it, “reminiscent of the Ash-Can School.”
Jansen’s Museum collections include The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), Russia, The PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art, Russia, The New Britain Museum of American Art, CT, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, MO,The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, Taiwan and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Jansen is also one of the ABSOLUT VODKA artist’s of this century along side names Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
Jansen’s awards include the New American Paintings Alumni inclusion 2011, curated by Dan Cameron, Founder of the Project New Orleans. The Aesthetica Art Prize 2012, United Kingdom, the Laguna Art Prize 2013, Venice Italy, the Dave Bown Project Grant in 2012 andinclusion at the Fleurieu Art Prize 2013 Biennale, Australia noted as the highest valued landscape painting prize anywhere in the world curated by Nigel Hurst, Director & Chief Executive, Saatchi Gallery London.

Social Realism (aka Socio-Realism) was most dedicated to fighting social injustice. This movement was the most prominent during the Great Depression in the 1930s. The Social Realism focused on the working-class, especially the poor, to highlight the appalling realities of the then contemporary life. Social Realists captured what they see without any embellishments to send a message rather than focusing on style or aesthetics. “The Responsibility of the Arts in a Time of Change.” The issues then become: Art makes people think, but do we, as creators, funders, cultural workers, think ourselves? Do we use our own practices to make ourselves think differently (or a new)?
About my Work
I understand that I like hard surfaces, I feel very little attraction for the soft…I can’t take a canvas with wrinkles and loose fabric, I like the hard textures and noble materials : woods, raw fabrics, primary colors, stencils, resin. My process is an exercise of the whole body, I I’m short which helps me to move quick and easy; I try to be daring and pernicious with my work, I enjoy the satire of what I am actually showing, some speak of death but certainly I am talking about life.

My aim is to create transformative and theatrical environments ready to be integrated into any social, cultural, ethnic, emotional or physical landscape. As such, in these environments, the viewer is invited to reflection and chooses how to feel his own experience. Emotionally and Physically stimulated, the public is engaged with the idea of a new space, his own space, which even being shared with other viewers, results into an intimate and unique experience. The different segments of an specific artwork wether in motion or not, create uniquemultisensorial spaces, coloured and virtual rationalizations of an Utopian Society, in which each individual chooses his own way to experience it, his own space, his own time to digest it, his own way to interact within itself. The artwork itself even eases the cross of each one of its layers , automatically removing, in thi s way, any emotional or physical border. This provides the time for reflection that walks along with the viewer during these multisensory and interactive experiences.
I prefer these realities.

Artist Tiago Valente works as a Creative advisor and consultant working on a freelance basis, with a vast background in Fashion and Jounalism, with more than 10 years of professional experience. He offers both Consulting and Coaching Workshops services for companies seeking to improve their products, as well as their creative strategy. An active profile trained on every single stage of the fashion chain process; creative direction, trend forecast, collection creation and design, branding and communication. All this with an understanding of the business as a whole complete concept. Based in Shanghai, but working both domestically and internationally with clients all over the world in Asia, Europe and US. Leah Oates

Oates has a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and a M.F.A from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Oates currently resides and works in Brooklyn, NY. Oates has had solo shows in New York City at Susan Eley Fine Arts, The Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, The Center for Book Arts, A4L Gallery, A Taste of Art Gallery and locally at Tomasulo Gallery in New Jersey, Real Art Ways in Connecticut, Sara Nightingale Gallery in Watermill, Long Island and at the Sol Mednick Gallery at the Philadelphia University of the Arts in Pennsylvania.
Oates’s work has been featured on the movie sets of Perfect Strangers, The Forgotten, Little Children and Rabbit Hole and on the TV sets of of Law and Order and Lipstick Jungle. OatesÕs work is in the private collections of Julianne Moore, Rebecca Quaytman, Susan Bode-Tyson, Mike Hoeh, Lise Curry, Cesar Llacuna, Elizabeth Houston, Bill Groom, Laurence Asseraf, Natalie Domchencho and Mark Waskow and her works on paper are in many public collections including the National Museum of Women in the Art, The Brooklyn Museum Artist Book Collection, The British Library, The Walker Art Center Libraries, The Smithsonian Libraries and Franklin Furnace at MoMA.
Artist Statement
The Transitory Space series deals with urban and natural locations that are transforming due to the passage of time, altered natural conditions and a continual human imprint. In everyone and in everything there are daily changes and this series articulates fluctuation in the photographic image and captures movement through time and space. Transitory spaces have a messy human energy that is perpetually in the present yet continually altering. They are endlessly interesting, alive places where there is a great deal of beauty and fragility. They are temporary monuments to the ephemeral nature of existence.
